The Mornington Peninsula has two kinds of names: the ones on the maps, and the ones we actually use. We print both. The Ninch: the name only locals use
Ask anyone who grew up around here and they'll tell you the Peninsula has a nickname: the Ninch. Short, easy, said without thinking. It's the word you use when you're stuck in traffic on Point Nepean Road and texting a mate that you'll be late, or when you're describing where you live to someone from the city and you'd rather not explain the whole map.
Nobody is entirely sure when it caught on, and that is exactly why it feels like ours. Nicknames aren't handed out by councils or tourism boards. They're earned by a community that needs a faster, warmer word for home.
